Battle Significance
Because the Siege of Petersburg lasted almost a year, it was one of the last battles that was fought between the North and South during the Civil War. It was a very important battle because it led to the end of the war, letting tens of thousands of soldiers return to their families. General Grant weakened and attacked Lee's army for close to 10 months in this battle. The prolonged struggle between the opposing sides led to the Confederate's surrender only six days after the end of this battle. The Siege of Petersburg forced Lee to surrender, ending the long and difficult war.
